In traditional Delhin society, the members of each caste and sub-caste were to marry within their own endogamous group. Until recently, any violation of this rule was a serious offence, the punishment for which was usually excommunication from the caste. Inter-caste marriage i.e., the union of a man and a woman belonging to two different castes was inconceivable till recent times.
